The production of THE GIVER in Chicago used a puppet as a baby; here is the puppet-baby with Jonas, played by Aaron Lawson and also the puppet-maker, Taylor Bibat. Usually the baby was wrapped in a  blanket and so the audience would only see a waving hand or nodding head; and the sound...whimpers, giggles.. was provided very effectively as well.

Nonetheless, at the end of the play, when the cast sat at the edge of the stage and took questions from the audience...a child asked: "Why did the baby look so weird?"

The puppet was head and shoulders above the limp doll often used by theaters but not as dazzling as the live baby used by the Kansas City Opera. But hey: you can't depend on a baby being as good as that one! The opera will be presented in Minnesota the end of  April but I don't know how they are dealing with Gabriel.

I know how I am, though. My new book...SON...is about Gabe. He is, in fact, the son; and the book focused for the first 2/3 on the young birthmother who gives birth to him and  then grapples with his loss. The final third of the book focuses on Gabe himself, as a teenager, experiencing the loss from the opposite side.

This dies not  fall into the category of Weird Babies...well, not really...but for some time now, to amuse myself, I have been jotting down unpublishable poems about strange children. Here's one:

Edmund, such a lovely child,

Cooed and giggled, laughed and smiled.

But when he was just short of two,

He sprouted wings and off he flew.

His parents, stoic at their plight,

Re-filled the feeders every night.

This reminds me of a story I heard about a live little baby girl who played Jesus in a Christmas pageant. Evidently she began cooing and hiccuping and shepherds got the giggles, Joseph and Mary were perplexed and parents in the audience were pretty amazed nevertheless.

After all, WWJD? or WWBJD? Wouldn't Baby Jesus have cooed?

Also, the MET OPERA did a Mingella production of MADAMA BUTTERFLY with the controversial use of a puppet. I have seen many 'Butterfly' operas and usually they find a cute smart child, tell him to stand here, move there, walk here sit there and it happens. With the endearing puppet, and the sensitive interaction with soprano Patricia Racette, I was moved to tears. The puppeteers were masterful with tiny movement and nuance. Each detail was natural and responsive - so very believable. You can find this on YouTube.

I am soooo glad that you mentioned something aboutSon! You have no idea how much that made my day! Now my mind is full of questions, like "Did Gabriel's mom grapple with losing him immediately, or only after Jonas left the community?" "Will the book explain what happened to the community after Jonas left?" I know.... I will have to wait until the fall to find out the answers to these questions and more, but thank you for giving my imagination something to work with in the meantime!

Hi, I am Farid Sawaqed from the school P.S. 27. I am right now in the eighth grade. In addition, we are currently reading the book "The Giver: and I have a question. From reading this blog entry, I learned that in the movie, Gabriel is actually a puppet. Furthermore, I also know that the puppet doesn't look like a baby which is why he isn't shown in the movie. Well why didn't you make a puppet that looks like a real weird baby and show him in the movie?
