I just received the this news from Tehran:

Shortlisted nominees of children's books of the 29th edition of the Book of the Year of Iran including fiction, science and technology, religion and poetry are just announced.

Nominees:

A) Fiction – Translation

1. 'Gathering Blue' - Lois Lowry – trans. Keyvan Abidi Ashtyani

2. 'Grateful Yours' – Jane Buchanan – trans. Parvin Alipour

3. 'Story of Sultan' – Samira Shafiq – trans. Mojtaba Rahmandoust

4. 'The Five Sisters' - Margaret Mahy – trans. Parvin Alipour

5. 'The tiger rising' - Kate DiCamillo – trans. Vida Lashgari Farhadi

6. 'Idle Witch' - Gianni Rodari – trans. Mahnaz Sadri

7. 'Long Way Home' - Michael Morpurgo – trans. Davod Lotfollah

8. ' Tamburlaine's elephants' - Geraldine McCaughrean – trans. Ali Jafari

9. ' Turk Ekizleri' (Turk Twins) – Jahed Ucuq – trans. H. M. Seddiq

It is especially surprising to me because GATHERING BLUE is a book about a repressive society, and we have come to think of Iran as being just that.  As it happens, though, I just last week saw the wonderful Iranian film called "A Separation": and it gave me a glimpse into the day-to-day middle-class life of that culture, and especially the role of women and girls which seemed less repressive in many ways than I had assumed. Not at all like the heavily veiled women under the Taliban.

Usually I am sent copies of my books in translation, but I don't think I have ever seen GATHERING BLUE in Farsi. One of the characters in "A Separation" is a 13-year-old girl, who is played by the daughter of the director. ( I wish I could have glimpsed what she was reading!)  Unfortunately I couldn't locate a photo of her...she has a haunting face. (This photo is two other characters in the film)

I am not surprised about the Gathering Blue as number one: a) because of the book's strength, b) because the people of Iran are intelligent, it is their government that is obviously trying to keep them in the dark.

Congratulations!

Hello Ms. Lowry,
Congratulations to you on being honored. I look forward to reading GATHERING BLUE and other works you have written. Today I am supposed to be packing for a trip to NYC where you and I will be in the same event - actually 24 hours from now.
BUT, rather than be 'organized' I immersed myself in THE GIVER and am grateful for the experience. One of my music students suggested it and I could not put it down - truly. Howmanytimeshavepeopletoldyouthat?!
The power of your book is immense. It is a crucial lesson for our world. And you wrote it during the time that I was producing Madeleine L'Engle's recording of 'Wrinkle' in 1993. Now all these years have passed and yet the connections continue.
I hope to meet you tomorrow and wish you great joy in your accomplishments.
Sincerely,
MaryJo Cally

Hello Ms. Lowry,
Congratulations on your book's nomination, it must be a great honor. I hope someday to follow your footsteps and write a book that will be nominated or even awarded.
I am in high school, studying my junior year. I am an IB student and I'm writing my extended essay on your book THE GIVER. I plan on writing about the society described in the book. I would love to be able to quote you for my extended essay. It would be an honor to be able to talk to you and learn your ideas while writing this book.
Sincerely,
Mariana Gonzalez

Hello,
I have tried to send you a message by opening a text box but I didn't succeed. Therefor I am sending you via this comment box.
My name is Sharona and I'm from Israel. I am an English teacher and a student. As a student I'm particicipating in a 3 day seminar which one of the activities is watching a play by the "Jerusalem English Speaking Theater". In addition I chose to do the assignment given on your book. It's the first time I'm reading "The Giver" and I enjoyed it so much that I'm recommending it to everyone I know. I also need to make an activity to the other Ss that are coming to this seminar, I had a few ideas and I will be happy to tell you about how it went and about the play as well.
I have learned so many things about you and your books that I feel that I know you well and I wish I could come and have a cup of coffee with you.
You are a wonderful writer maybe it's not the right word because you are so much more than this. And by reading your book I feel that I need to re-spect everything in our lives and have appreciation to this life, not to loose a moment of them without a smile, joy and happiness.
I would be happy to write you more....
Thank you,
Sharona.
