Daylilies
Well, I was taking a little time from my computer to go outside and weed a little. But then I had to go in and get my camera. It is the height of daylily season, and I have so many varieties...mostly thanks to Beverly Hendricks at Deerwood Farm & Gardens in Waterford, Maine (not far away) ---- http://www.deerwoodgarden.com if you want to take a look at this amazing place where Bev and her husband are raising 200+ varieties of daylilies. I go there every summer and always come home with a new treasure. (And it was Bev who taught me that you can add daylily petals to salads!)
Okay! Feast your eyes!

I had a similar mountain lion (Eastern Cougar) experience right here in coastal Maine--similar reaction from humans, too.
I drove by it in a wooded area, thought "That is one huge yellow lab," and realized what it was about a quarter of a mile later. I turned around and there it was crossing the road, long, sleek, low to the ground, the end of its tail curling up in unmistakeably feline fashion. It panicked as I inched nearer, and disappeared into the woods.
Afterwards, everyone wanted to know what I'd been drinking. The neighborhood took in its housecats, though.

Thanks for your wonderful work Lois. I'm a 26 yo male in my third year at medical school ini AZ and The Giver provided a much needed break from the rigors of medicine. My wife and I are dissecting your book. I think you gave Gabriel his first memory because he might symbolize Noah, bringing in fresh life and a new start. Whether or not you meant that, your book has given us valuable discussion. Our kids will get a copy for their birthdays.
