NCTE in Philadelphia
The NCTE convention was several weeks ago, and I know I have mentioned it before, but while I was later in Germany one of the teachers who had attended, and who had a book signed and a photo taken, emailed me the photograph. I intended to post it---and told her I would---but I was traveling, with my laptop, and when I got home and returned to my regular computer, the photograph remained with my traveling stuff. So, like sunglasses and folding umbrellas, it lay forgotten in some luggage until now.
And now here it is, me and Michelle Hudson from Louisiana. Nothing at all unusual about this photo, but it represents so well the many, many teachers who travel long distances (often, I think, at their own expense) and bring such enthusiasm with them --- for books --- that it is very heartening for authors. We love being reminded of what happens to the books when they leave our hands, and to talk to the teachers who use them in classrooms, who care so much about individual children,
Thank you, Michelle, and every other teacher like you, for all that you do.

Thank you, Lois Lowry, for your wonderful books. As an alumna of Saint Mary's, I am so happy that you were honored this year. Last summer, I read 'Number the Stars' with my boys and no history book could teach them what they learned through the characters in that novel. This summer, we're looking forward to 'Gooney Bird Greene'. Your writing is a gift to all children. (And adults!)
Hi, Lois. It was a sincere pleasure to have you visit Saint Mary's College. The graduates were so excited to have you here. They grew up reading your books in English classes, so it was fitting that you were at
their Commencement as many of them wrapped up their formal education.
Meanwhile, it's a "Lois Lowry book reading summer" at our house! My oldest daughter (13-year-old) and I have read "The Giver" and "Number the Stars" (loved them). I just started "A Summer to Die." As you know, our middle daughter (11-year-old) had a "Birthday Ball"-themed birthday dance party and all the guests loved their signed books as favors. Our youngest (7-year-old) just took out a Gooney Bird book from the library last night.
Can't wait to read it together.
You've certainly got a lot of fans in South Bend and at Saint Mary's College!
Hi,
