My Father

My father
was not only a dentist and an army officer, but also a very fine photographer. I remember that when World War II began, and he knew he would have to go off to the Pacific (he served on a hospital ship called HOPE, and later on the island of Tinian), he took this photograph of himself and went into the darkroom to develop and enlarge it. This has always been my favorite photograph of my father...because I remember his taking it, even though I was only four, and because I think it shows someone who knew what was about to happen to the world, and who felt sad about it, and worried for his family.
